It’s Supposed to be Easy
By karen | January 16, 2007
Most of the U.S. is caught up in the January deep freeze this week. My part of the country is no exception. It has been colder than a witches… well you get my drift. Lets just say that it has been really, really cold.
But the cold has given me all the more reason to engage in my favorite January ritual. I’m one of those people who never quite got over that “I can’t wait” syndrome that kids get at Christmas. January is the time that I just can’t wait for the spring flowers from the bulbs I plant every fall.
So today I went out to my yard and over to the flowerbeds, I removed some of the snow and peered expectantly at the soil. My heart skipped a beat as I saw just the little tiny glimpse of green just barely peeking through. My flowers are on their way. Of course, they won’t arrive completely for another 2 ½ months or so (so long!) but they are peeking out and preparing for their glory.
You know I love the spring flowers. There is something about planting the bulbs in the fall with the promise of the amazing beauty at the end of the long winter that I just revel in. I love how the crocuses will bloom right through the snow and the cold and how even the daffodils and the tulips can handle a major spring snowstorm and still show their hardy and spectacular colors and beauty.
And as I peeked today, when it is so, so cold outside I feel a sense of appreciation and awe at nature. Those bulbs are not waiting for perfect conditions to start growing and becoming. They bloom and they grow and they are spectacular right through all of that resistance of the snow and the cold. They bloom where they are planted with no complaints, no struggle, and no pain.
That is the way of the Universe. Grass doesn’t struggle to grow. The season’s change and the beauty of nature is just magnificent in a different way.
Life is not supposed to be hard. Life is not supposed to be a struggle.
Only people make it that way.

I am in awe of the miracles of nature and all of the lessons we can learn. All we have to do is pay attention.
