Expectations

“Don’t get your hopes up”

That is about the most pathetic and disempowering advice there is.  Is there any other phrase in the English language that can deflate your dreams and discourage your aspirations as quickly as “don’t get your hopes up”?

Imagine this.  You’re trying something new.  You’re excited.  You are brimming with the possibilities and reveling in the excitement of this new wonderful and delicious thing and some well-meaning but completely misguided naysayer comes along and proceeds to irrevocably rain upon your parade and make sure that your excitement bubble is completely burst by saying “don’t get your hopes up”.

Your tummy gives a lurch.  Your mind sees the possibilities of defeat that were not seen before and all of a sudden your power is gone.  Gone. Gone.

Yes, of course you should ignore them.  Of course you should not listen. Of course, you should not hear of how they think you might fail.  Of course, they don’t know what they are talking about.  Of course they are not you.  Of course, of course.

But it’s too late.  The seeds of doubt have been planted. The best you can do now is to not engage in those thoughts and definitely do not let those thoughts grow.

You can play it safe in life.  You can never get your hopes up so as to never be disappointed.  You have the choice to live like that.  But disappointment over something that you wanted that didn’t quite work out is not nearly as bad as regret for not even trying.  You’ll get over the disappointments of life but you may not recover from the regrets.

Get your hopes up!  Dream the big dream.  Believe that you can have the best in life.  Don’t be afraid of a little disappointment.  But do be afraid of a big regret.

Live life to the fullest. That means high expectations, high hopes, and big dreams.

Life will bring you what you ask for.  Have high expectations.
