Gotta-Get Goals

By karen | March 24, 2007

Meme: A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

A new friend from the Blogosphere, Alex Shalman of Alex Shalman.com Practical Personal Development has started a new meme. You may remember a week or so ago when I wrote about my daily success habits, and before that others were writing about “why do I blog”, (for some reason I fell off the radar on that one) but meme’s are fun, enlightening and always thought provoking. This one is no less.

This time it is the 5 to 10 goals that you just gotta-get to say that you have achieved your wildest dreams in life. The 5 or 10 best, biggest, most over-the-top goals from your goals list, in other words, the 5 or 10 most compelling dreams of your life. Whew!

Wow! So is this something I want to share? These things are sacred to my heart and my soul. Am I opening myself up to criticism? Why do I even think about that? My goals and my dreams are mine. They wouldn’t be in my heart if I couldn’t reach them. I believe that. I know that. I know that I can be, do or have anything my heart desires. So I have thought and pondered this list. I eliminated a few of the things on my vision board, like the houseboat on Lake Powell and the new Cadillac Escalade (yes, I want to be part of the freak parade!) because even though those things are wonderful and nice and I do dream of Lake Powell (one of my favorite vacation destination spots in the entire world- yes the water is warmer than the air in September) those things are not the biggies. Those material items are not in the top 5 or 10 gotta have them to achieve my wildest dreams. My wildest dreams are bigger, brighter and more compelling to me. My wildest dreams are what I live for. I guess a couple of them at least must be part of my purpose for being here.

So I am taking a deep breath and here I go…..

1. I want to be the best writer I can be. I have found a passion. When I am writing I often fall into that blissful state when time stands still, when I am caught up in my own joy, when the words flow and my fingers fly over the keyboard, when I lose all sense of time and space. It is an amazing thing. So I want to be the best writer I can be. I want people to enjoy my work, to learn and to grow from my words, to be entertained and inspired, to recommend my work to their friends and loved ones. I want people to want to buy the books I write. I want to have New York Times Bestsellers and Amazon.com bestsellers. I want my words to make a difference in the world. I want to be the Best writer I can be.

2. I want a happy, healthy and strong family. I want to raise my daughters to be happy, healthy strong women. I want them to know that they are capable and worthy of becoming anything they desire and becoming the best they can be. I want to help them to be confident, secure and comfortable with their own voice. I want to always have a loving and wonderful relationship with them. I also want to continue to nurture, to enjoy and be grateful for the amazing relationship I have with my husband, Kevin. He is the Love of my Life, my best friend, the one I dreamed of. I am blessed beyond measure to have him in my life and I want to continue to have that amazing relationship.

3. I want to be healthy and strong and vibrant well into my old age. I want to continue to do anything I want to do, physical or otherwise, until I am old, old, old. Just last week some 95-year old (or so) man challenged Jack LaLanne, who is also in his 90’s, to a boxing match. I admire that. Grandma Moses, (who shares my same birthday by the way!) started painting in her 70’s. I admire people who don’t let age stop them. With age comes Wisdom. I want to age gracefully and well and continue to contribute to the world until I am old, very, very old.

4. Financial Wealth. Yes, I want to be financially “set for life”. I want enough money in the bank that I can live happily and joyfully on the interest alone. I have the minimum amount that I want down. I want at least that much and more, more, more if possible. With an abundance of money in my life I can have the Freedom to give and the Freedom to more joyfully experience everything that life has to offer, including traveling around the world and contributing to important and valuable causes. I want to be financially wealthy. I want an abundance of money and an abundance of all good things in my life.

5. And last, but by no means least, (I’m only going to go for 5 here not the 10) I want Peace of Mind. I want to happily and joyfully live every day my life. I want to handle all of life’s up’s and down’s with grace and aplomb. I want to accept the things I cannot change and to know the difference. I want to be at peace with loved ones and peace with myself for all of my days. I even want peace with strangers. The Dalai Llama has said that we are here to experience happiness. The Tao Te Ching talks of balancing your life and opening your heart. The Bible says, “Go in Peace” and “Peace be with you” and more throughout. I believe that we are here to experience Joy and in order to recognize Joy I need Peace of Mind. I want Peace of Mind, Heart and Soul.

Well there you have it. It is only 5, but 5 very important things for me.

Wow, that was quite the exercise. Thank you. It really brought me back to focusing on the life that I want, the things that really make a difference and what is really important. Sometimes what is really important gets lost in the day-to-day conundrums we all face. That happened to me this week. It is a wonderful thing to refocus and refresh. This meme did that for me. I am grateful!

Now who can I pass this amazing opportunity along to? Hmm…let me think…

    Karen,

What a great list that is obviously from deep in your heart. That’s where the power is!

Your quote sums up very well why I was so excited when Alex put this together:

“…brought me back to focusing on the life that I want, the things that really make a difference and what is really important…”

That’s what it’s all about right there. :)

    Thanks Aaron,
Yes, it is from the bottom of my heart. So much so that I didn’t know if I truly wanted to share it but it was such a great exercise for me (as I said about the “conundrums”) so I felt compelled to follow through. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It clarified so much for me! I thank you and I thank Alex for the opportunity.

    Hi Karen,
This is a great project. The meme has gotten to me and I will be adding my list later today or tomorrow. But, in the meantime, a few thoughts I have about your list…

It is okay to want the “things”. Sure, money is not everything but it sure is extraordinarily important. When the road to peace of mind and the best life possible involves the “things” like a house at Lake Powell or a Cadillac, that only positions you for gratitude and gratitude will take you further. The truth is, you CAN be anything you want, you can HAVE anything you want, which gives you the ability to DO anything you want and that is when you make a real difference in the world. But, making a difference does require money. So, see yourself as having, not wanting and create the life that includes everthing. Great work Karen, I really enjoyed the read.

    Hi Wanda,
I’m glad you enjoyed reading it. I think it’s “more than okay” to want “things” too, but for me the material things don’t “Float my Cork” as much as the things I mentioned. The houseboat and the Escalade are just part of the icing on the cake, but for me they are not the cake.
I already “see myself as having”.
    Thanks for stopping by!

An excellent list of goals. It is my wish that you will have them all.

[...] I know that daydreams can be an incredibly powerful tool to create a life to be treasured, a life that we dream of, the life that measures up to the biggest dreams and aspirations. I look back on my own life and I can clearly see how the daydreams and visualizations that came naturally helped me to create the life that I wanted. [...]
