The Still, Small Voice

By karen | May 11, 2007

We all have times in our lives where we might not know which direction to take. Should I stay or should I go? Do I take the job or do I look more? Do I start this new project or do I wait? And then the big question that most of us have wrestled with at different times “What should I do with my Life?”

The answers to all of our life’s questions are inside of us. I truly believe that, not just from Faith, even though at times it does take Faith, but experience has taught me that when I get quiet and I listen to the “still, small voice” the answers are always there for me. Always.

As I was growing up I was taught about the “still, small voice”. The people who tried to teach me about the voice also tried to tell me what the voice would say. It took some experience and trust in myself to come to realize that the voice inside of me was my own truth and it was okay if it didn’t conform to their standards. They knew nothing of my life, my experiences, my desires, and my dreams. They knew nothing of my vibration. They asked me to blindly accept their truth and their way of life. It didn’t work for me. I could not accept their truth as my own. I was too much of a thinker. I’m sure that many people have had similar experiences with oppressive religions. But your truth will never come from something exterior to you. Your truth will only come from your own “still, small voice”.

So how do you hear the voice? How do you learn to trust your own intuitions?

A start may be to spend some quality time with you. That would be alone, just you, nobody else is invited. Get comfortable with yourself. You are the only one who will always be with you no matter what. It really is beneficial to become your own best friend. Be gentle with yourself and never criticize. Get comfortable with being alone and listening to the intuitions and wisdom that will come. It may be a feeling, it may be a voice, it may just be a sense of something but your Inner being and the Universe want to communicate with you.

Learn to trust yourself. Trust that the answer that you are receiving is the right answer for you. Other people are always ready to give advice and recommend ways for you to go but they often have their own agenda, their own perceptions of life and their own beliefs. Learn to trust yourself. Have Faith that you have all the answers you need then just get quiet and listen. You will learn to hear the still small voice and you will learn to direct your own paths. It may take some time and you may make mistakes but you will learn to trust your own intuitions.

You are a magnificent child of this Universe. You have more potential than you can even imagine. But imagine it anyway.

Life is as it should be. Have Faith in your outcomes. And as for the questions of life, like everything “This too will pass”.

    Karen,

Great stuff! Most people are so conditioned to look at the world for feedback, when in all actuality no one is more adept at telling us what we should be doing than ourselves.

Learning to listen to our own voice is something that everyone should do. Thanks for sharing this, Karen! :)

Yes, the answers for you lie within you and the answers for me lie within me. We just need to learn to listen!
    Thanks for stopping by, Aaron!

    Hi Karen and Aaron,
Great article… I, too, believe that we each everything that we need right inside. Our society (here in the US) encourages us to look outside for answers, happiness, etc. I encourage people to look inside and connect with their essential spirit.

I believe that when we start to honor and acknowledge our intuition (still, small voice), we make room for it to grow. I rely on my intuition to help me in every area of my life. At times when my intuition leads me out of my comfort zone I trust it and take that leap of faith. I have never regretted that! :)

Yes, actually the inspiration came from a reader who wrote to me and asked about fate and destiny and which direction to take! I hope I gave her some valuable things to think about!
    Thanks for stopping by Kristen!

Beautiful article Karen - if only children were taught to trust their inner voice, how different would our lives be?
But then, as you say, all is as it should be.
Thank you for a great article.

Yes, our truth always comes from within. Others may offer information and reference points yet, only we know what is best for ourselves.

    Karen,

The “still small voice” comes from 1 Kings chapter 19 when THE LORD spoke to Elijah. I would rather you call whatever it is your talking about - something else. Thanks!

Do you think that THE LORD has a problem with me using those words or would that just be you?

How does THE LORD speak to you?

I am with JD BUT/AND this was the still small voice that you grew up hearing about. If we listen really carefully we can all hear this still small voice inside our hearts not because any of us are wacked out looney tunes but that is just how God speaks to us. None of us really want to continue our wicked ways just as God sent Jonah to Nineveh to tell the people there to turn away from the evil they were doing so we similarly have that opportunity.

You know that Jonah had other plans but even when he messed up and he asked God to “get me outta here” so God made allowances and off Jonah went.

The key message I feel from Karen is that man can do some pretty awesome witnessed by the likes of Mother Theresa and MK Ghandhi etc (with apologies to those I missed out!) but when you harness the raw energy of the human spirit with a feeling of doing that something that is innately right and worthwhile then you have huge energy and power.

JD is right in that for him this phrase does come out of the bible. But it is up to each of us to find the truth for ourselves. But beware if you are looking for concrete proof.

You will only find the truth in the still small voice.

As for me ……….. “speak to me my father in a small voice.”

    Nice visiting with you guys.

When you connect to your Source you can harness “the raw energy of the human spirit”

I think that “the still, small voice” can speak to us all….not just the people written of in the Bible.

Yes I agree but that still small voice is not us speaking to ourselves.

Within us all is a powerful force that just keeps us alive.

I do hear the still small voice. But I would much rather hear the still small voice of the Creator (God) of the universe than the universe (creation).
