Distractions on the Way to Success

By Mohammed | December 19, 2006

This is actually one of those things I could have never thought too much about and I would have blissfully continued on my merry life.  But of course, that is not how we grow and become better.

I can honestly say that I rarely, if ever, get bored. I live in an incredibly diverse Universe and there are always a million new things to capture my attention. The Internet just adds to my excitement when a new thing captures my interest because so much information is so easily available right at my fingertips.  I seem to be drawn to the artistic and creative things mostly but health, fitness, politics, religions, the stock market, vegetarianism, etc. etc. and you name it, I seem to be interested in everything.

Some of these things are just a passing fancy, something to file away and perhaps do later, like the boxes of mosaic glass in my craft closet and the tubes of watercolor that are not often used.  Some of these things develop into a passion of their own, like knitting, yoga, spinning (that is cardio/cycling exercise, not spinning wool into yarn-which so far I have resisted).  And then there are the books.  I am the local library’s best customer.  If I purchased everything on my Amazon.com wish list today the grand total would come to somewhere around $2500.

But I have come to wonder if all of these diverse interests are preventing me from doing the things I always dreamed of doing.  After all, if I am busy learning this and doing that I really don’t have time to start trying to accomplish the big dreams, especially the scarier ones, the ones that are bigger than just the ordinary everyday accomplishments.

So as I contemplate the resolutions of the New Year and I ponder the things I always dreamed I would do, I think that perhaps I may need to be more selective about learning about the new things that capture my fancy.  After all, Life marches on.  Time will pass whether I create my dreams or not.  The time to begin doing, becoming, realizing the Big Dreams is Now!

Many things that we have an interest in can seem like mere distractions. Yet, we often find “gold” in the strangest places. As long as we invest a set amount of time to the achievement of our goals, the exploration of our other interests can turn out fruitful. If not, maybe they can just help us relax and enjoy life.
