The Secret is Out
By Mohammed | February 28, 2007The backlash has begun. “The Secret” has reached the mainstream. There have been shows and segments on Oprah, Ellen, Larry King, the Today show and tonight the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
It is also featured this week in Newsweek. “The Secret” has definitely hit the masses.
It’s been almost a year now since I first saw it. I watched it on my computer for the first time on April 7, 2006. (I’m good at remembering dates.) It was a Friday night and I was very excited because I had gotten the idea for the Live the Power presentation that afternoon. I had this email from Joe Vitale telling me about this movie “The Secret”. So in the evening my husband and I paid $5.00 and we sat in front of our computer and watched it after the kids went to bed.
I loved it. I really did. But it was not a Secret. I knew about it from many, many books that I had read. “The Power of your Subconscious Mind” was one of my favorites, if you haven’t picked up your free copy you can do so here. Some of the other amazing books were “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles and of course the classic “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.
Another funny thing is that the name “The Secret” is not even completely original. Earl Nightingale had a wonderful audio program called “The Strangest Secret”. You can probably still pick it up at Nightingale-Conant. I wish I had it on CD because all I have is the tapes since I got it so long ago.
Tonight on The CBS Evening News some critic said, “It was just a lot of old hot air packaged in a new balloon”. Anyone can be a critic.
But I look back at some of the people in history that espoused the Law of Attraction and it is a pretty distinguished list———
Napoleon Hill-American Author of “Think and Grow Rich” one of the best-selling books in history
Andrew Carnegie-Founder of the Carnegie Steel Company, which later became U.S. Steel. At one time he was purported to be “The Richest Man in the World” He sold U.S. Steel in 1901 and devoted the remainder of his life to philanthropy and giving away millions of dollars.
Dale Carnegie- (no relation to Andrew) American Author of the Classic “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (an amazing book that I recommend you read if you haven’t already) and founder of The Dale Carnegie Course which is one of the most popular and enduring self-improvement programs in history.
Earl Nightingale-Famed Radio personality and motivational speaker, Co-Founder of the Nightingale-Conant Corporation which is still a world leader in Success, personal development and Motivation products.
W. Clement Stone-Founder of the Combined Insurance Company of America. In 1979 his company exceeded $1 billion dollars in assets. In 1960 W. Clement Stone teamed up with Napoleon Hill to author “Success through a Positive Mental Attitude” (that book is in my nightstand right now I think I will read some of it tonight!)
Robert Collier-Famed Self-improvement Author of “The Secret of the Ages”
(there is that Secret word again!).
Grandma Moses-American Folk Artist who began painting in her 70’s.
Peace Pilgrim-An amazing woman who walked over 25000 miles from 1953 to 1981 spreading the message of Peace.
And then there is the Bible “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he”
Proverbs 23:7
Jesus-“If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth”
St. Mark 9:23
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock and it
will be opened unto you”
St. Matthew 7:7
“According to you Faith be it unto you”
St. Matthew 9:29
“And nothing shall be impossible to you”
St. Matthew 17:20
The New Testament is filled with inspirational scriptures that support the idea that our thoughts, or our faith, can move mountains.
Buddha- “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.”
And I can go on and on and on.
The point I’m trying to make is that if “The Secret” and “The Law of Attraction” is just a lot of “old hot air” I want some more of that “hot air”.
Don’t you?

You have put together a very similar list to one that I have been thinking about and talking to others about.
Things like the fact that the concepts discussed in ‘The Secret’ are the same concepts that have been discussed by some of the most MEASURABLY successful and influential people in history.
People are taking the whole thing out of context when in fact they should be embracing the “hot air”. Even if they don’t believe in the LOA, nothing bad can possibly come from having a great, positive attitude about life.

Well Aaron, it must be that great minds think alike! LOL.
You are so right nothing bad could possibly come from having a great, positive attitude about life.
Thank you so much for stopping by. It is a joy for me when I know people are reading!

Hi Karen, great list. I had two sets of friends watch The Secret. One set didn’t like it because they “couldn’t see what everyone is so jazzed about”. The other set said they were suprised how the questions they ask themselves make such a difference in their outlook. Guess which couple is happier.

One of the first things my husband and I thought when we first watched it (soon after it was first released) was “No way… we paid $5 for this? We KNOW this already! this isn’t a SECRET”
but it was interesting enough for us to keep watching. and really, it’s NOT a secret. Anyone who has been on any kind of spiritual journey or search has been exposed to it. But the movie, The Secret, presents it in a way that makes it reachable. It gave us strategies in which to use it.
I’m really glad that we didn’t turn it off, because although I had a great life before watching it, It has made something that was already good, even better!

Have you ever thought that the secret has always been available, it just that not everybody is willing to hear it? I have been astonished at a few people who have watch “The Secret” and movies like it, just to say it’s just a fantasy.
A few weeks later as you are quitting your job because you found a way to be successful doing what you want, that same person wants to know how you did it. Do they really forget? Or, Do they just not get it?
