Chris,
It's true...we do things now hoping for a better result in the future...but our lives are NOW

speaking of going off in tangents...religions are really bad about that
"do this ritual now and you are promised rewards in heaven"
But what about life now?
I've got some posts percolating in my head here...
Thank you for inspiring me!

I love conversations too, Karen :) Especially about interesting topics that have lots of tangents and sometimes challenge our perceptions of reality.

I think you're definitely on the mark about the ego. That really is the root of it all... even that wanting to find peace is just the ego saying, "I'm not at peace NOW. How can I find it? Oh, I'll go hurt/maim/destroy everything so nothing can hurt me. only THEN in that future time will I feel at peace."

It's so easy to get into that trap... of thinking if we do something now, then we'll reap the rewards in the future. And while there is a logical truth to that, that very belief is what keeps us from having NOW what it is that we desire in the future.

Oh, again such a tangled web we weave with our words. ;)

Chris,
I think you are right...but the problem lies with the person and their ego....as the ego is what lives in the future and the past because the future and the past only exist within our minds as the past is over and the future doesn't really exist as life yet.

Life can only be lived in the Now...the future has yet to exist except only in our minds. Spending our precious lives fighting for the future wastes our lives.

But I believe that the people think that peace will be achieved by their actions however, peace can only be achieved in the Now. Peace for the future is always just an illusion of how life may be but Now is the only time you can actually live.
whew, that challenge of words again!

(I love conversations! thank you for your comment!)

"Why do any of us spend any of the time in our lives in hatred? Why do any of us spend our time fighting against others? What could possibly be so important that is would cause us to lie and deceive in order to hurt another person?"

This is a topic that has challenged me for a long time, but about a month ago it "clicked" and I finally understood it so deeply I can't describe. That said, I will try to share a bit of my epiphany in case it is of use to others.

What I came to realize is that *everybody* wants to be at peace. It's easy to see this when we focus on joyful happy thoughts, but what about violence? How can that be somebody wanting peace?

Well, when I thought about why wars are fought... ultimately, it is because the conquerer feels as though if they annihilate everything that opposes them, they will find peace.

When two people fight, it is because they want to expunge the things which cause them pain.

When we hurt somebody with our words, there is that part of us that hopes by pushing people far enough away, there will be nobody around to hurt us.

So we push away to avoid pain... because we want peace. We fight to conquer, so that all that is left is our peace.

And we do those things because it feels a lot safer to hurt others than it does to acknowledge, feel, and dig deep into our own pains and release them to actually move to a place of deep-felt peace.

Anyway, I don't know if that all came out the way it feels inside to me, but then again such is the challenge of words. :)
