Chasing Butterflies

By karen | July 13, 2007

My neighbor has the best collection of butterflies I have ever seen.

Have you ever tried to catch a butterfly? Many of us tried as children. I’m sure you can imagine running around with big butterfly net trying to catch those elusive and beautiful creatures.

What happens if you catch the butterfly? I seem to recall in elementary school that after you catch the butterfly , you put it in some type of alcohol solution and then you pin it up to a cork board of some sort for safe keeping. For some reason a dead butterfly just doesn’t seem nearly so beautiful and amazing as a live butterfly that flutters around (in my eyes anyway!) but humans do it anyway.

And what do they have? One butterfly on a cork board. Or perhaps an entire collection but if they want more they have to keep on chasing butterflies.

I’ve mentioned my neighbor’s yard and garden before on this site. It really is a masterpiece of beauty. Everyday she is out early in the morning before it gets too hot, lovingly tending to her beloved plants, flowers and trees. She prunes the established plants and she diligently pulls all of the weeds that sprout seemingly overnight. The faded flowers are deadheaded and if the trees have fruit it is checked for ripeness and picked at its peak. I often see her coming home and unloading new plants, new trees and new flowers. Many times I am the lucky and grateful recipient of divided perennials and new propagations.

Every day she tends to her passions and her garden grows and becomes more and more beautiful.

Her garden has become a haven for butterflies. She never has to get a net, she never has to chase a butterfly because she has built something so magnificent that the butterflies just keep coming back. If one leaves or dies there are always more to take its place.

So consider your life, your business, your dreams, your legacy? Are you spending your time building something lasting? Something of Love and Beauty that will attract the things that you want? Or are you just chasing butterflies, catching one or two here and there but watching your big dreams elude you?

Your true wealth lies in how well you are able to use your energies to give and contribute and receive and allow in the Universe.

Are you working on your true wealth? Or are you chasing butterflies?

Wow Karen! I’ve been mulling a post in my head about just that concept: attract don’t chase. I see how skeptics might think that this is all hoopla, but having lived it, I am so much more calm and prosperous. Everything is just flowing to me and my time and energy is spent in the zone rather than trying to get stuff. So much easier.

This story beautifully illustrates that nuance.

    In Spirit,
    Nneka
