Path, Passion and Purpose

By karen | July 18, 2007

I was told the “Secret” to success. I believed it at the time. I even followed the advice. I did it.

“Successful people will do the things that unsuccessful people won’t do”

I suppose I created some success. I made some money (there’s more to success than money but that is another post, another day). But I never reached the higher pinnacles of success. I never would have. Why? Not because I wouldn’t do what it takes but because I was missing 3 important ingredients.

“Path, Passion and Purpose”

I have come to believe, ( no, I’m going to change that to “know”) I have come to know that the most successful people reach their highest success because they have the 3 P’s. They are on their right “Path” They have found their “Passion” and they are living their “Purpose“.

Think about this. If tomorrow morning the front page of the sports section of your favorite newspaper had a headline that read “Tiger Woods to be the new point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers” the world would be shocked. Everybody would be talking about it around the water coolers and a consensus opinion would be “What is he thinking? Why is he wasting his talent?” The fact is that it would be ludicrous. Tiger has the talent for golf. Tiger needs to play golf. It is obvious with the enormous success that he has created that he is on the right path, he has a passion and he is fulfilling a purpose.

And while it may not be quite so clear cut for many of the rest of us, there are things that we have a joy and an affinity to do and there are things that are difficult, painful and a struggle.

Many problems in our lives happen when we try to buck the current and do things that are outside of our path. Our ego’s say we need to struggle but when we look to our souls, let go of the struggle and do what comes easily and naturally, what makes us happy and joyful, our lives flow. Life becomes easy, effortless and fun! There are still challenges but the difference is they don’t hurt! They are not painful and excruciating effort is not necessary. Now I did not say “no effort” but an all-out, joyous and triumphant effort, even a continuous full-scale expenditure of energy effort is not painful when you have a passion and you’re on the right path. It only hurts when you are missing those 3 P’s.

If your life and work is hard and difficult and a enormous struggle you are on a resistant path. A resistant path may become a little easier at times but being in the flow of life will always elude you. A resistant path will never be easy, effortless and joyful. The truth is that there is something better out there for you.

The people in this world who create enormous success are the people who find their own flow of life. They are on a path that fits them, a path that is suited to their own skills and talents, a path where they feel joy.

They are on a path with heart!

Life is not supposed to be difficult. It’s only your ego that needs to struggle.

Hi Karen, your example reminded me of Michael Jordan quitting the NBA to go pro-golf (or was it football). The reaction was the same. What is he thinking?

As I’ve been admitting to myself that I really want to be a spiritual teacher, I ask myself that question every time I think I should get a better IT job. “What are you thinking? What you should be doing is finding more opportunities to be a spiritual teacher!”

    Thanks for the reminder :-)

Nneka, the Universe is calling you to be a spiritual teacher. Listen to the voice!

Such an important part of understanding the Secret - when you focus on external ego goals it will be hard and a struggle.

When you align with your internal self, as reflecting by your path, purpose and passion… it will flow.

In a way, The Secret has it backwards, it’s not about focusing on what you want to happen, but WHO you want to be.

    Much joy,
    KL

I think you’re right. It’s more about aligning with your true Inner being and being more of who you are instead of getting more stuff! the exterior stuff takes care of itself if you tend to the inner!
    Thanks for stopping by KL!!
