The C that Changes Everything
By karen | July 27, 2007
I “should” do the laundry. I “should” clean that bathroom. I “should” make a menu and I “should” go grocery shopping!
But every time I think about how I “should” do something like that resistance comes up. I think of a million other things I would rather do, a million other things I want to do, places to go and people to see. I actually think about everything except the task at hand which is what I “should’ be doing.
So I thought about that. I love it when the laundry is done, and the house is spotless and the menu is planned and the grocery shopping is done. It’s not that I don’t like to have it done. It’s more that “should” thing! I tend to think “I should” and the next thought comes up as “ugh!” .
So I considered “how can I change this?” , “how can I find my own personal power to complete these tasks that are so nice to have completed but I tend to want to put them off? Is there something I could do to change my associations towards those tasks that “I should” do?
What if instead of saying and thinking “I should do the laundry”, “I should go grocery shopping”, “I should clean the pantry” I said something different? What if I changed my thinking and my words and I said…
“I could do the Laundry” Wow, that changes everything. I could do the laundry and then it would be done and folded and put away and that would feel great! It would be so much easier to just have it done!
“I could clean that bathroom”. Heck, it will only take about five minutes and won’t it be nice to know it’s clean!
“I could clean the pantry”. That would be nice too! Everything organized and arranged so I can easily find whatever I need is so convenient!
“I could plan the menu and buy the groceries”. It is so nice to have a plan and know that I have everything I need to cook dinner and have healthy meals. And then I can just work (which to me is more like play!) or rather I could just play up until its time to cook dinner and then I can just go and enjoy preparing a healthy meal. It will be easy and simple!
Wow, I “could’ do all of these things and it will make my life simpler and easier and I know it will make me happier and…
See how easy that is! I just changed the “sh” to “c” and everything feels different! It works for me!
Now I’m off to clean the bathroom, do the laundry, plan the menu, go grocery shopping and ……

I think you must be living in my brain, picking away at all my self-destructive thoughts. I’m all about “should”, and get so overwhelmed that way. I’m going to start doing this today! Thanks!

Anyway, thanks for stopping by! I hope it works well for you too!
