The Definitive Rules for Success

By karen | August 16, 2007

It’s time to put together some definitive rules for success, the real truth, a map or template that everyone can follow to reach the pinnacles of success.

Lets see, what are some important things we can put on this list?

Well Ben Franklin was a success minded kind of guy and what did he always say?

“Early to bed and Early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”

That’s it. Tell everyone to get up early in the morning and get after it. After all if you are sleeping in you are wasting your time right? Surely that is the kind of advice that will work for everyone.

Or not.

Remember Ann Landers, the famous newspaper columnist? She was quite successful, had her column syndicated in hundreds if not thousands of newspapers throughout the U.S. Well apparently old Ann did not subscribe to the “early to rise” edict. Ann Landers was a night owl who regularly slept late in the day and stayed up late into the night completing her work. She didn’t get up early but no one can argue that she wasn’t successful at what she did.

Okay, maybe that’s not a definitive rule.

Next..…

Let’s see, why don’t we all give our customers choices. That’s it! We’ll be like “Burger King” and let them

“Have it Your Way”!

Surely that is what is the definitive answer for success! That is it! Give them choices!

Or not.

Henry Ford was often quoted as saying

“Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black”

Can’t argue with Henry Ford’s success. We can say that times have changed but have they really? There are things today that people buy just because of what they are. Can you say “I-phone”? Does it really matter if there is no variety to choose from?

Okay so far we are striking out on these definitive rules for success. We’ll have to think of something else.

How about this one?

“You have to work hard! Success is a Struggle!”

Well as I have watched and studied the most successful people, it seems to me that most of them love what they do. To them, it doesn’t feel like hard work or a struggle even if they work long and have challenges.

Warren Buffet, who is arguably one of the most successful people on the planet these days has said

“I may have more money than you, but money doesn’t make the difference.
If there is any difference between you and me, it may simply be that I get up and have
a chance to do what I love to do everyday.
If you learn anything from me, this is the best advice I can give you”

It sure doesn’t sound like Warren Buffet is “working hard and struggling” does it? Sounds like he loves his work.

Strike three, you’re out!

Perhaps there are no definitive rules for success. Nothing that is a “sure-thing” for everyone. But Henry Ford did give us some wonderful advice….

“Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, You are right”

Perhaps that is the “definitive answer“.

That Henry Ford quote is a great one, Karen… and very true.

My own favorite definition of success comes from Earl Nightingale: “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” The important part (for me) is that it’s *progressive*. It’s a journey, not a destination. If you’re working toward it, you are already a success.

And I sure am glad that being an early riser isn’t a requirement! Thanks for another great post! :)

This really wasn’t a well thought out article…

Thanks Lyman! Yes, what I really wanted to say it that “there are no definitive rules for success”. We can define it on our own terms!
Love that Earl Nightingale quote too!
It is “progressive” just keep at it!

    Darth,
Well that brings to mind another one

“you can’t please all the people all the time”

    Sorry you didn’t like it…..

    Thanks for your comment!

I wouldn’t say there are no definitive rules for success just different strokes for different folks. I would also say that just as soon as a set of rules is applied, they change. And the quote I like best is that “rules are made to be broken”. That is a fun one. So if we all follow this last one it is no wonder there is no definitive set because everyone is going to break them anyway. LOL. Great post!

Yes, I like that one too!
“Rules are made to be broken!”

    So True!
    Thanks for stopping by!
