Rainmaker
By karen | September 10, 2007
I read somewhere that Wayne Dyer, the great and very prolific writer of many self-improvement and inspirational books, actually writes all of his books by longhand, yes, with a pen and paper on a yellow legal pad. When I think about that I feel a debt of gratitude to my junior high typing teacher. Back in those days it was called “typing” as “keyboarding and computers” were still science fiction, out in the future.
I was reminded of this as I planned to start a new deliberate creation process that I recently learned. You may remember last week when Jeannette Maw from LOA playground was a guest blogger for me. When she submitted her excellent post I responded back to her with just one question, “What is a Pray Rain Journal?” Jeannette quickly wrote back and told me about it.
A Pray Rain Journal is a special journal that you use to help get yourself into vibrational alignment with your dreams. You write about your dream as if you were already living it.
It is named after a story that was told by author Gregg Braden about accompanying a tribal shaman on a rain dance. He expected a big production of music, costumes and dance. However, he was quite surprised by what he saw.
The Shaman walked alone to an area marked with stones. He quietly walked around the perimeter for a moment, stopped and closed his eyes in a quiet, meditative state. There was no sound, no costumes, no dancing. It would seem there was no visible ritual. After a short time in the silence the Shaman said he was finished and he was ready to return home.
Gregg was surprised at what he saw and he exclaimed to the Shaman “I thought you were going to pray for rain”. The Shaman said “Not pray FOR rain, but PRAY RAIN”. He explained that he “prayed rain” by imagining and feeling the rain landing on his skin, sensing the moisture as it collected on the dirt beneath his feet, smelling the sweet and fresh fragrance, hearing the pitter patter of the drops as they fell, seeing the dewy wetness upon the foliage and watching it fall from the sky. He felt it. He saw it. He lived the experience with every minute detail all within his own mind.
He “prayed rain”.
And that is the purpose of a “Pray Rain” journal. You write everyday about this dream of yours, and how it feels as it is manifested, how it is to live this dream, what it is like, who is enjoying it with you. You write your dream everyday as if you are already living it in all of its glorious details. Make sure and write in the present tense and really feel the joy and the happiness that comes from your fulfilled dream. You can expand your dream as you wish with the only stipend being that it feels good. It feels joyful. It feels happy.
The sole purpose of the “pray rain” journal is to get you into vibrational alignment with your dream.
The promise is that by the time you get to the end of your journal, you will have already reached your dream or you will be in the process of it unfolding within your life.
“Pray Rain” is feeling it accomplished while “praying FOR rain” is keeping it out in the future.
So as a new resolution for my new year, I planned on starting a “pray rain” journal. I thought I would buy a beautiful journal and write everyday as I “prayed rain”. But as I thought about it, I realized that the real “flow” of writing comes to me as I sit at my computer, as my fingers dance over the keys and the words flow from my mind. That is where I find my bliss. When I get a pen in my hand, I usually end up doodling and drawing flowers, faces, writing names in calligraphy but not writing. So a formal journal would probably not be quite as effective for me as a special “pray rain” file on my computer. And I really believe that most things in life are more effective when you individualize it and make it your own.
But I do love beautiful journals, perhaps I’ll do a little bit of both.

Awesome post, Karen! I have heard this same process called “scripting,” and in fact, I’ve got a blog post planned about it at some point in the future.
I like your version better, though, and no surprise to learn that it came via Jeannette. She’s a piece of LOA work, that one.
Thanks for this awesome post, Karen. Really good stuff!

Thanks Aaron! Yes, I was really intrigued by the term “pray rain journal” and I was thrilled when I found out about it.
I’m looking forward to really enjoying this process every day.

You come up with the most fabulous stories! Big thanks to you and Jeanette.

Interesting idea… it gave me inspiration for writing a new story. Thanks!

Thanks Priscilla! So glad you enjoyed it.

Chris,
I’m excited to read your story! I’ll keep an eye out for it!

Thanks for this post Karen. I’ve heard the Gregg Braden story before and it’s great to be reminded again of the power of intention and positive feelings.

It’s the kind of story that is wonderful to hear again and again!
I know I loved the story so much I had to share it!

Thanks for spreading the word about the powerful fun of using pray rain journals, Karen! This is hands down my favorite deliberate creation technique. Not everyone appreciates the writing component, but for me personally it lends SUCH stronger focus than visualizing.
Did I read right that Aaron called me a “piece of LOA work”? lol
That might be the best indirect compliment I’ve ever received!!

Thank you Jeannette!
I think the writing will work really well for me also because I really love to write.
As for Aaron, that is absolutely a compliment!

What a Great story! I have used the process called it “scripting” but I love the name “Pray Rain Journal” and the story behind it!
Put a smile on my face …. and made me realized - I need to do some more “pray rain” on a daily basis.
I use the computer — as a pen in my hand is a doodle machine!
Like you - a start drawing flowers, funny faces, shapes — Oh I am thinking, thinking the whole time — but it never gets down on the paper!
Now I know why I could never study from my notes when I was in school!

I love the story too. For some reason it resonates and appeals to me more than calling it “scripting” even though it is the same process.
It’s fun to know that I’m not the only one who uses a pen as a “doodle machine”. Some of my best art was made with Uniballs!

Off topic………….
I believe that by just being a part of “Priscilla Palmer’s Personal Development list” suggests that each of us post this list. You like me (Killeris at “Attitude, the Ultimate Power”) are on this list. If you have already posted it, THANK YOU. If you have not posted it, I am officially putting out a challenge that you add additional sites that fit the theme and post the entire list. This is my opinion only. If you disagree I respectfully understand. If you do agree with me this list can be found at: http://mondaymorningpower.blogspot.com/2007/09/personal-development-list-challenge.html

Karen, what a wonderful idea. I really like Gregg Braden’s books. I write my ideas out long hand with pen and notebook. I can’t always be near a computer, but I have a number of notebooks and journals that get taken along in the car or on the airplane for those times when the words start to flow. I have never heard of the idea of a rain journal. I really like the idea. Thanks for sharing it. Have a glorious day.

I have journals and notebooks too but when I really do best is with the computer. Then my fingers keep up with my brain!
Thanks for stopping by Patricia

Hi Karen, I just read the post at LOAplayground. Thanks for bringing that to me. I am really inspired by Jeanette’s story and will use this method. Thanks again !

Jeannette’s story really inspired me too!
This is a fun and effective tool!

Karen,
Again, the right words at the right time! Thank you so much for this. Today I link to your post, and I will visit Jeanette’s as well.
To me, pray rain is all about gratitude ~ when you can dream/pray something so vividly that you can fully feel the gratitude for its gift.
When we can learn to live like that every moment, how powerful life must be!
Thanks again for opening up more gratitude and blessing …
Love,
Pippa

How powerful we all could be…..
You know when you are in that state the manifestations come quickly, easily and joyfully. I wrote just the other day about how I found a parking space at the children’s hospital but I hope people realize that it wasn’t the parking space but rather the joyful state I was in that was the important thing!!
ooooh, I need to get back to writing! I’m getting very wordy with my comments!!
Thanks for stopping by Pippa!
(I love your name, it reminds me of one of my favorite book characters from when I was a kid–
Pippi Longstocking! That makes me happy! I hope you know that I think that is a joyful compliment!)

Pray Rain is a wonderful illustration of creative imaginaton. That’s just the problem. With no disrespect to other contributors, all the endorsements are about how wonderful it is. However, where are the endorsements for actually using the technique and what results were actually achieved?
September 26th, 2007 at 7:42 am
Here is a post from Jeannette Maw on some of her results
http://loaplayground.blogspot.com/2007/09/pray-rain-in-action.html
I loved hearing about her results in this post. I think you will to.

Karen, I *do* think Pippi Longstocking is a compliment ~ she was one of my favouritest heroes as a child (somehow I never made the connection with my name, LOL). I feel honoured.
I really stopped by, to just say four words, in utter excitement after two days of praying rain:
Last night it rained!!
Love,
Pippa

Wow, Pippa that is wonderful!
(so where do you live? I live in the 2nd driest state in the USA so I live in a desert! but recently we have had rain)
WooHoo!! Manifested Rain and now to manifest other wonderful and joyful things!….
September 27th, 2007 at 12:48 pm
I think your desert is probably drier than here in inland South Africa where I live ~ though I grew up with water restrictions and a deep respect for rain.
Yes, on to other glorious things!
(The rain is still drumming on the roof ~ bliss.)
Much joy,
Pippa

We have had rumors of water restrictions and many summers some of our towns said you could only water your lawn on every other day….
enjoy the bliss of your rain….
and on to the other glorious things! yes!
