The Storyteller
By karen | September 18, 2007
There’s a story I can tell about my life. If I choose to I can tell it in detail, embellish the parts that will bring sympathy or attention, exaggerate the details as I choose. I can tell this story and all of its significance to anyone who will listen, to anyone who will hear. I can tell it over and over to myself. It doesn’t hurt anyone. It may be the truth as I see it. And a sad story won’t hurt anyone. That is anyone except me, the one who tells it.
We all tell stories about our lives. You may have heard a version of one or another of these.
“Math is my worst subject”
“ I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks”
“And we were so poor, all we had to eat was milk and crackers”
“He done me wrong”
“And I used to walk 8 ½ miles to and from school everyday in 6 ½ feet of snow, uphill both ways”
The fact is that the stories we tell are the stories that define our lives. There is a poignant line from original version of the movie “the Secret” that stands out in my mind. I’m paraphrasing here but Esther Hicks (speaking for Abraham) says “have you ever noticed that those who speak mostly of prosperity are the ones who have prosperity, those who speak mostly of illness are the ones who are ill”. The point it made. Your stories define your life.
If you accept that you are a creative being and that you are responsible for your life, you need to realize just how powerful the stories you tell are, just how powerful your stories can be. You can argue “but I’m just telling it like it is”. But reality is a matter of perception. There is always more than one way to look at things. If you can’t see the bright side of the situation then you don’t have to talk about it. You don’t have to relive it. You can leave the story untold.
Life isn’t always sweet and easy. But Life is what you make it. If “what is” is not everything that you want it to be, then don’t tell the story. Tell about the bright side of the situation, tell how you want it to be , tell about how you wish it could be or don’t tell it at all.
When you argue for your limitations they become yours. When you tell the story of your limitations, you remain in the limitation. They become you.
Are they really something you want to hold on to?
Tell the stories of happy times, health, joy, wealth and abundance. Start telling the good stories, the triumphant stories, the stories that you want to define your life. If you don’t feel like you have those kind of stories in your life yet then start telling the stories to yourself. Isn’t that the part of the process of visualizations, scripting, pray rain journals?
You are creating your life, whether you acknowledge it or not.
The stories we tell define our lives.
Are the stories you’re telling supporting your dreams or keeping you down?
stop talking about it and make it better.”

Great post! It reminds me of the old saying “If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all.” I never realized just how important that lesson really was.

Thanks Priscilla! I think Abe says it well when he says “you can stop talking about it and make it better”!
I appreciate you!

Good Tuesday evening to you, Karen !
It is true to a large degree what we are saying to ourselves and about ourselves defines our lives.
Then the next part of that is : is it truth we are speaking ?

Hi Annie,
I suppose it would depend upon how one would define “truth”, which is a deep subject, “how to define “Truth” as my truth may be completely different from someone elses—but does that make either truth “less than”?
A subject definitely worth an entire blog post don’t you think….

[…] The Storyteller from Karen at Live The Power is very apt for me right now. I’m at the stage where my old story no longer serves me so my new story is now a fairly present and detail-light one - I like it better that way. […]
