Ageless and Timeless and Very Wise

By karen | November 13, 2007

At a visit to the health food store yesterday I was taking a look at the gifts section, like every store this time of year they had a section just for the Season, and there were cups and candles with sayings on them. Of course, they had “What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?” which I had heard before but there was also a new question that I hadn’t seen before. And it got me thinking.

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?”

Thought-provoking, don’t you agree?

Society these days seems to worship youth, yet it is difficult to think about going back to being younger. I mean, I’ve learned so many more things about life now. The wisdom of age feels more valuable and much more precious than the perfectly smooth skin and the naturally blonde hair. The experiences of life that you have as you get older make life easier. Now I see the Joy in life and I revel in the moments whereas I often spent time fretting about foolish things when I was younger. Now at least I know enough to try not to do that. Sometimes I even succeed!

The lure of youth without the wisdom of age does not seem like a fair trade at all.

When you get to a certain age, you realize just who you are, what is truly important to you, and you get to a point where you are comfortable in your own skin. You become comfortable with who you are and who you are becoming.

It is a wonderful feeling and there is something wonderfully freeing about that.

So while of course, I would love to look young and beautiful and have the health and strength of youth, the wisdom and experiences that have came from the years I have lived are irreplaceable in my mind.

Age is a state of mind. In my life I have known very old, young people and very young, old people.

Ageless is perhaps the answer.

Ageless and Timeless and very Wise.

    Hi Karen,

It is very true: “Age is a state of mind”.

We should work on ourselves to get younger every day, with more and more experience yet with a lighter heart, more joy and a more positive attitude; with a more reduced number of friends but better ones, with acceptance and confidence.

Love the point you make. Definitely more in the mind than in the body.

I just wrote a post about building a solid foundation and how in my adolescence I read a lot and thus hung out with my role models, “wise old men.” The effect of that is I’ve never feared growing old. I just make sure that every year is better than the last, that I gain in maturity what I lose in bodily strength and function.

I love each decade that I have experienced so far more than the decade before. I would not want to be 20 years old again. I love where I am in my 50’s.

    Karen,
Age is indeed a state of mind. I remember hearing a recording of a presentation by Deepak Chopra where he spoke of a culture where the best runners were all over 60. No one there imagined being a very good runner until that age, and so it was!
    many blessings,
    CG
