Following and Chasing and Dreaming

By karen | November 17, 2007

“Mom, Do you follow your dream or do you chase your dream?”

My daughters question intrigued me. My first response was you “follow” your dream and then she said “but they said on TV “I’m not just going to follow my dream, I’m going to chase my dream” And of course, that became a whole new discussion.

It is just semantics, a way to use the words. It is just a way to say something that means nearly the same. The meaning lies in how you comprehend the words.

But that is not all that it is. It is also a vibrational offering. How do you feel when you use the different word?

For me I want to follow my dream. As I follow, I am guided, given directions and I reach my dream, the destination I set. It feels like it is the flow of life that leads me. To follow the dream feels good. I follow my heart and the directions are clear.

When I say the word “chase” I feel a sense of desperation, a feeling of playing “tag” in second grade and not wanting to be caught, yet wanting to catch. There is a sense of unease, of running and running, chasing and chasing but never arriving. For me it does not feel good to chase the dream. There is a feeling of uncertainty, if I have to chase it, I may not catch it.

You may think it doesn’t matter. And it really doesn’t if you feel nearly the same about both words. But words do evoke emotional responses. Words do have different vibrations. Only you can answer what that vibration is for you.

So do you follow your Dream or do you chase your Dream?

That sounded like quite a discussion!

There is a difference between the words. However, each word has a meaning so broad that the differences within each of them is as big as the differences between them.

I tend to chase my dreams. I follow my guidance, but I chase my dreams. Chasing implies energy. Focus. Action. Following seems (to me) to be more sedate, passive.

Both sides are needed, of course. But having been overly passive for too many years, I find that “Chasing” my dreams has been much more effective for me.

Wow, thank you! That is exactly the kind of discussion I wanted to start!

Exactly, it is what the words mean to you and the vibration that it evokes.

The point is to make it work for you. After many years of chasing I realized that when I relaxed and went with the flow what I really wanted came to me. So my meanings are different.

    Different experiences bring different emotions.
Thank you for your comment, like I said that is exactly the conversation I wanted to start!

    Hi Karen,

I have to agree with John. ‘Following’ just sounds too passive. I rather ‘chase’ which is more active.

Like John, once I have my guidance, I actively take actions to chase my dreams. I believe that action breeds success. If we keep taking actions, review, stay on course, success is a definite eventuality. It’s only a matter of time.

Having said that, the “review” and “stay on course ” portion requires us to follow our guidance so that we don’t get sidetracked. Maybe that’s where you are coming from with regards to follow your dream?

Thanks for joining in the conversation Lawrence!

I think that it’s my past experiences that have brought me to the point of wanting to “Attract” success rather than “chase” it.

I have often written about it here. Here are a couple of posts that may explain it better….
Stiletto’s, Bootstraps and the Laws of the Universe
    Chasing Butterflies

Actually, perhaps it’s more a matter of following my passions, rather than chasing other things like money….

I almost feel it depends on what stage of dreaming I am in. For example, some dreams are more general initially. These dreams I try to “flow” with until I have more “specific direction.”

However, for my specific dreams, I chase with a desparation (as you mention in your post). They necessitate my focus and energize me. I will chart a course to achieve them.

It seems that both words are appropriate for different times and seasons!

In the second ‘Conan the Barbarian’ movie, there was a spoiled princess who used the term “I go where I feel myself led,” and I thought that was pretty good advice.

I follow my dreams by constantly being on the road towards them, but I chase them by paying attention to the signs that I am given while on that road. :)

The consensus seems to be “a little of both”
    ;)

and even spoiled Princesses can offer good advice!

I like how Aaron phrased it– there are times I feel like I’m following and other times the energy level is so high that it can only be described as “chasing.”
