The Definition of Bibliophile

By karen | November 24, 2007

Bibliophile:
1. A Lover of Books
2. A Collector of Books.

My friend Rick at Shards of Consciousness tagged me for the Book Meme. I have no idea where it started but I will say that this is a meme that I can appreciate. It’s easy, doesn’t take too much thought and it is just fun, at least for me.

You see I absolutely qualify as a Bibliophile. I love books and apparently I collect them also, judging from the numbers I came up with on the first question.

First Question:
How many books do you own?

Well, as promised on Friday, I counted them. I’m not sure I got every last one of them because many of them tend to be here and there. After I was done counting I saw a couple of others to add to the list. I thought I had a lot but I only came up with a mere 1227.

That’s all, not too many!

But my theory has always been, you can’t have too many books. It’s impossible.

I also have 24 books checked out from the library right now. I know, what am I thinking? The only saving grace I have there is to say that most of them are books of knitting patterns and a few cookbooks, some children’s books for my kids, just one or two books to actually read!

And checking my Amazon wish list, I see that it is now at a total of 311 books. Given unlimited funds I might not actually purchase all of those but there are 4 or 5 that I really want right now. Soon perhaps.

As a afterthought I did notice that when I was selling real estate I often went into homes that did not have any books at all. That would be a sad life for me. I love books, the more the merrier, I say!

Second Question:
What is the last book that you read?

Okay that is a tough question because I read many, many books. Some memorable, some not so much. So I will mention one of the most memorable recent books I have read–

“The Giver” by Lois Lowry is a young adults book that was recommended by
Wilson Ng from a Bizdriven life. It was a very thought-provoking and interesting look at a technology driven future. (I hope real life never ends up like that!)

Currently I am reading “The Divine Matrix” by Gregg Braden. It is actually taking me quite a while to get through because it is so fascinating and it causes me to stop and ponder our place in the Universe. I read a bit and ponder a lot. Interesting book! Highly recommended!
I need to finish it soon though because the library wants it back!

And I am also reading “Bridge to Terabithia” to my daughters. I loved the movie. I usually think books are better than movies but so far the movie was pretty true to the book.

Third Question:
What was the last book you bought?

Last week was the book fair at my daughters school. I bought “Bridge to Terabithia” for the whole family and “Fancy Nancy” for my daughter who is fancy (yes, I think they wrote that book about her!) and “Alice the Fairy” just for fun! I love the book fair!

Fourth Question:
Name Five Meaningful Books.

I’ve read many, many books of many, many genres (except romance, but an occasional Story about Love is different!) So I will start with my two favorite works of Fiction. These are two books that I read and reread and I always enjoy.

1. “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck. Beautifully written book! It is easy to get lost in the lyrical prose.

2. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. I guess Ms. Lee put the whole of her heart and her soul into this book because we haven’t seen another one from her. She doesn’t need to write another one. She created a masterpiece on the first one!

And moving on to the different genres.

3. One of the best, most concise and simple Self-Improvement books ever written,
“Oh, the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. This short book says it all, the key to a happy life!

4. “You can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay. With this book it is the message, the inspiring message that self-acceptance and self-love can change your life. Louise Hay is someone I truly admire. She is an inspiration to me.

And Hay House publishes many of my favorite books from many of my favorite authors.
(Perhaps one day….)

5. And last, one of my favorite books and you can get a copy of the e-book here is
“The Power of the Subconscious Mind” by Dr. Joseph Murphy. An amazing book about using the Law of Attraction and changing your life.

And I think that I must have a few honorable mentions here.
“The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles
“As a Man Thinketh” by James Allen
“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill

*******

Passing on the Meme’s is the hard part for me. There are so many meme’s out there. But I will pass this on to
Lyman of Creating a Better Life
(Lyman invited me to join Shelfari, so I know he likes books!)

And a new friend, who I don’t know too well yet..…
Alex from the next 45 years
(45 years, hmmm, Alex must be about the same age as me!! My next 45 years are going to be Awesome!)

P. S. Just a for fun footnote, I read Oprah’s book clubs latest pick “Pillars of the Earth” back in the early 1990’s when it first came out. Great book! I don’t agreewith all of Oprah’s picks but this one I enjoyed and I would recommend it!

Happy Reading!

It was fun, wasn’t it? I’ve enjoyed seeing the range of books that people read.

I loved book fairs when I was in grade school. I drug (dragged?) my parents to every one - with their willing cooperation. My only regret was they limited how many books I could buy.

    It really was fun!

I think going to the book fairs now is as much fun as it was then! Last week I went to a donut’s breakfast at school and then the bookfair, lunch at school and then the bookfair, bookfair before Parent/teacher conference….
    Love the bookfair.
    When I was a kid I loved the Bookmobile…
it seemed so magical to me!

[…] A Bibliophile is a person who loves books - I’m definitely one of them, and Karen of Live the Power has asked me to participate in a book meme - to answer a few questions on books that I own, have read, and that mean something to me. […]
