Does Human Emotion Affect Our Health?
By karen | December 7, 2007
I have long thought that our emotions, feelings and thoughts affect the health of our bodies. And no it is not that people deliberately think about a disease and then they create it but rather they spend time feeling less than optimum feelings, like hate and lack of forgiveness for others or a lack of self-love and self-acceptance for themselves.
Well recently I read about a very interesting scientific experiment that may confirm this idea. The question is “Does Human Emotion affect our health?” I will relate the experiment and you tell me what you think.
Back in the 1990’s, scientists working with the U.S. Army investigated whether or not of the power of our feelings continue to have an effect on living cells, specifically DNA, after those cells have been removed from the body. Traditional thinking has been that the answer is “no”, that after the cells or organs or whatever is removed from the body that emotions would no longer have any affect on the removed tissues. However, I have read of many instances in the case of organ transplants where the people involved felt a strong and undeniable connection to the other person and I always found that to be fascinating.
So is there an answer?
Well in a 1993 study that was reported in the journal “Advances” a study was conducted in which a swab of tissue or DNA was taken from the inside of a volunteers mouth. The sample was then isolated and taken to another room in the same building and placed inside a specially designed chamber where the DNA was measured electronically to see if it would respond to the emotions of the person. Keep in mind that the person was in a separate room behind closed doors and hundreds of feet away.
The person in the other room was then shown a series of videos that were designed to create genuine states of emotion inside of the body, the videos contained images that would give a range of emotions, such as graphic war footage, erotic images and comedy. In fact the idea was to bring the subject through a wide spectrum of emotions within a short period of time. As the subject watched the video’s the DNA in the other room was being measured for response.
The incredibly interesting thing that happened is that as the subject experienced the emotional ups and downs the DNA in the other room also showed a response, SIMULTANEOUSLY! The DNA in the other room responded as if it were still connected to the body! The space between the person and the DNA did not change the response whatsoever.
An interesting footnote is that the official Army experiment ended while the person and the DNA were still in the same building and separated by just a few 100 feet. However, the scientist and his team continued the experiment and ended up separating the subject and the DNA by a space of 350 miles. At that level of separation the results were exactly the same. It appeared that the DNA would respond simultaneously with the subject regardless of the space in between!
Well if human emotion has that kind of effect on DNA that has been removed from our bodies what kind of effect does it have on DNA that is still within our bodies?
Another thing to think about is about the many people that we come in contact with every day and the transfer of DNA that happens as we shake hands, hug and just touch other people. What kind of energy are we giving out to the world?
Perhaps the notion of separateness is now being challenged by what science is learning. Ancient spiritual traditions have always told us of our connection to everything, Is science proving that now?
For further reading and some other extremely interesting scientific findings I recommend the book “The Divine Matix” by Gregg Braden.
I have often mentioned here that I greatly admire the work of Louise Hay.
There is now a movie about her life and her work entitled
“You can Heal Your Life-the Movie”
I ordered my copy yesterday. If you follow the link you can check it out.
I am not affiliated with Hay House and I am just passing this on because of my longtime admiration for Louise Hay.

Karen, I believe that our emotions do have something to do with our health. It is all energy. This is along the same line as the Intention Experiment from livingthelifield.com where love was sent to water from meditators around the world. Also, the research of Dr. Emoto of Japan found that the water forms beautiful snowflake formations when positive thoughts are sent to the water, while when negative thought is sent, the water is murky, unstructured. Considering that the earth is over 70% water as is our bodies, it would be wise to be positive and loving with ourselves and others.

I’m actually quite familiar with Dr. Emoto and his studies and I even considered adding that to the post but decided to just focus upon the other experiment.
The intention experiment has been coming to me over and over again so it is something I need to look at.
All of it is so amazing though!

Karen, did you happen to see Gregg when he was in town last month?

I didn’t! I missed that announcement somehow!!
Did you go? I would absolutely love to hear the details. I’ve been loving his books even though they are deep and make me want to take time and think and ponder and think, so it takes me much longer than usual to read!

Wow, Karen, thank you for posting this! Aren’t we just amazing beings? And we know so little yet about all the wonders contained within us.
Of course the mind simply boggles at the thought of what effect the energy of our thoughts and emotions have on our bodies, let alone the people around us.
This has so much worth for me in the recurring physical challenges I am examining in my life right now, hypothyroidism and migraine, which I believe are definitely both rooted in the emotional.
The question is: if we know this now, how do we turn it around? How do you change distress/depression/negative emotion into everything that is positive? There must be millions of ways.
Life truly is an adventure!
