Blue Skies Smiling at Me
By karen | January 27, 2008
Blue skies smiling at me….Well, actually that was yesterday, today the gray, gloomy and glum skies are back. We’re expecting the next storm late this afternoon or early this evening. But yesterday was beautiful– blue skies, melting snow, a bit of a warmer temperature. I lifted my face up to the sunshine and soaked it in. It wasn’t the warmth (still cold!), it was just the light.
And I felt better.
For the last few weeks I haven’t been at my optimum self. I’ve wanted to hibernate, lock the doors, turn off the phone (and even the computer), settle into some warm blankies with some yarn and knitting needles, a few good books, maybe a movie or two, and not come out again until spring.
You see, in my little corner of the world we are experiencing the “winteriest” winter that we have had for many years. I could be tempted to use another word that starts with “w” to describe this winter that we are having but that wouldn’t exactly be accurate. This is actually the best winter we have had for many years, the best as in the most snow, the most storms. After years of drought and low water levels, this year the snow pack is 100 to 120% of normal throughout the state. It is a good thing. We should have the water we need to fill the lakes, water the grass, nourish life.
But it has been cold and snowy, dark and gloomy. My daughter asked me why she didn’t have any ski pants. I explained to her that we are not the type of family that wears pants when we ski, we are the type of family that wears Life Jackets.
“Ah, Mom, not that kind of skiing!”
“But you said “Skiing”. I love waterskiing!”
“….Oh, well you gotta keep warm. We’ll figure something out. A life jacket won’t work!”
And we bundle up and off we go. Winter will be over soon. Will it be soon enough?
After doing some research I have learned that there may be an actual physical reason why we feel like hibernating in the winter. Light is an important nutrient that our bodies need to create Serotonin, a feel good hormone and vitamin D, which is also very important to help regulate our moods and energies. When the days are shorter and gray and gloomy it may be that we are not getting enough light to be at our optimum best.
Everybody needs some “Sunshine”!
I know that the mind can affect the healing of your body, and I tend to think that I just need to “snap out of it” when I’m not feeling up to par. But the mind/body connection has to go both ways. Maybe sometimes we need to nurture our bodies so we can heal our minds. A balance is what we need. The mind and the body are unequivocally linked.
Both need to be nurtured and cared for in order to create our best life.
So yesterday on that beautiful sunny day, I reveled in the blue skies, I put my face up to the sun and I soaked it in.
It was wonderful.
And as for the other days, I now have a full spectrum, daylight lamp sitting on my desk. The light is nice! No more hibernating! I’ll be back to happy and joyful before I know it!
But if not…..
I’m an optimist. This is the year! This is the year he finally sees his shadow!
…….Hope springs Eternal.
Happy Winter!

Hi Karen…
Oh - How much I do Love the Sun! And I do understand winter!
I’m in the great northeast of NY — winter is usually here for quite a long time…. This winter has been cold - but I’ve seen worse and I’ve seen better.
Yesterday the sun was here too! My house faces the West — up in the mountains - So I get absolutely beautiful sunsets… and… gorgeous sun shining in the house.
About 4:00 yesterday the sun was bright and there it was splattered all over the easy chair — that chair was calling me — So I put myself in it - closed my eyes and felt that warm sun massaging me! Ohhh for a brief time I was in a lounge chair on a beach in Puerto Rico!
What a Treat!! And have you noticed - the days are getting longer each and everyday — Spring is on it’s way!

The days are getting longer! Your part of the world is probably a little more winterier than here–even though we boast “the greatest snow”.
We rarely get the bitter cold but we have had a few bitter cold days this year. We have just had so many gray days!

Karen:
I really enjoyed this article because I was just in Florida for the much-needed Vitamin D. One day I was about to go to the gym when the phone rang. It was a friend who freelances for a dealership in OH and wanted to know if I was interested in going for a 20 plus hour drive to Orlando. She had to drop off a car and pick one up but was planning to stay a day or two at a friend’s house.
Not one to miss an adventure, I went with her and boy, the sun’s rays was absolutely delicious! I soaked it up as much as I could. I tried to capture the moment in my mind so that when I came back to the chilly temperatures, I’d still be back there. It was a much needed boost!
So you’re right - we need sunshine. At least 15 minutes of it a day or so they say.
Thanks for the inspiring article. I enjoyed it! And now you can come out of hibernation. LOL

oh, Stephen, I envy you! Florida does sound nice on a day like today, the sun is sort of out but the wind is just bitter cold! Also another storm is supposed to be here by afternoon and into the evening and morning….oh, Winter will be over soon!
