Resolutions…

By karen | December 27, 2006

As the New Year of 2007 swiftly approaches, I am struck with the thought that “New Years Resolutions” have lost their credibility with me.

I don’t know too many people, if any, that actually come through and reach their resolutions.  It seems to be a January thing.  Every January 1, everyone is all fired up and going to take the world by storm, but by February it has worn off.

I notice this every year at my gym.  I consistently go all year long, but in January I almost don’t even want to go because there are crowds.  All of these people trying to get into shape and lose weight because they resolved to do it.  Yet when February comes along the gym is back to normal with just the regulars and a few newbies who decided they liked it enough to keep going.

It is not that I don’t believe in resolutions.  I believe we can all make great changes and improvements in our lives.  It’s the “appointment” mentality of starting January 1 that seems to be the problem.  If you are ready make your changes today start today.  If you are not ready make your changes start in mid January, February or June.

When you are mentally prepared to take on the new challenge is when you should start.  The New Year is just that–the beginning of a new year.  There is nothing “magical” about that day that will make your resolution stick.  The magic comes from your own mind and your own thoughts.  You have the power within you to make your resolutions work out and you can tap into that power any day of the year.

When you tap into your own power, that is when the magic happens.  New Years has nothing to do with it.

I read that 86% of people do not continue with the resolutions into the month of February.

I also don’t think that resolutions work well. There is a significant difference between making a resolution and a commitment. I agree New Years has nothing to do with it. When people feel their deep need for change and tap into their own power, magic does happen.

Excellent point. Resolutions are great if you truly are committed to something, but the day is more up to the person not the calendar.
