Allowing Others and Practicing Non-judgement
By karen | December 28, 2006
When I first wrote this post I prefaced the article with a short summary of the famous blue eyes/brown eyes experiment conducted by Jane Elliott. It was meant as just a preamble to lead into my original intent. However, it has somewhat overshadowed my message so at this time I am choosing to remove that part and I shall leave my original intent here.
Please enjoy my original intention from here on in this post. I do hope that it gives you some things to ponder, reflect on and think about.

The blue eyes/brown eyes experiment really shows in the extreme just how ridiculous prejudice can be. Yet there are so many things that we don’t even think of as prejudice that are just as ridiculous.
It is often seen with religions and politics but it is even seen with such crazy things as nutrition as you can see if you ever run across a Vegan extremist. There are those among us that think that we are the right ones with all of the right answers and everyone else is therefore wrong. There are those among us that think that we have the better and of course more superior answer and the attitude is “I am right and you are wrong”.
Just because you believe it’s the truth does not mean you can or you should even try to convince me. I can find my own truth. If you think about it, you would want me to afford you that same privilege and freedom.
What is right for one person may not be right for the next person. What feels good for me may not feel as good for you. That does not, under any circumstances, make me right and make you wrong. It just doesn’t. It makes us different and that is okay. That is more than okay. Diversity in the world and diversity in thinking is one thing that makes life wonderful and interesting.
But it is important for us to allow others to be, do and have what they want in their own lives. And most of us would want others to allow us to be, do and have what we want in our lives. Some will choose this and some will choose that and both choices are good and right. They are just different from each other.
We’re all different and we’re all the same, a wonderful paradox.

[...] I think that all religions can bring us closer to God. But I think that when the religions push against each other and claim to be the only ones with the answers then they take us further away from God. The human Ego takes us farther from our spiritual quests than any other thing. All of the great spiritual traditions have said to “practice non-judgment” but people often do and they justify it through religion. [...]

It is great that we are all different. If not the world would be so boring. I believe the key is to be able to believe what you want, and also to accept that others have the right to believe what they want.

[...] And since I have seldom written about my thoughts on this subject, it is rather ironic that the most popular post ever written on this blog was (at least for me) about that very subject. “Allowing Others and Practicing Non-judgment” from clear back on December 28, 2006 has the honor of being the most popular post that I have ever written here (according to that fancy widget that I installed). While I did not mention religion specifically, my thoughts were on the subject. [...]
